The Dallas Cowboys have been excellent defensively in 2022, riding the wave of their turnaround from a season ago. One major factor in their performance this season has been their ability to sack the quarterback, as they currently lead the NFL with 24.
Since Week 1, the Cowboys have been missing one of its cogs in their defensive front. Veteran edge rusher, Tarell Basham, has been on injured reserve with a quad issue. On Wednesday, Basham had his 21-day practice window activated, meaning he can be added to the active roster at any point during that span.
If Basham can not find his way back to the 53-man roster over that time then he will be added to the injured reserve list for the remainder of the season.
Basham was signed by the Cowboys last March. As a rotational piece, Basham appeared in all 17 games (six starts). He logged 55% of the team's defensive snaps (627) and tallied a career-high in tackles (39), tied a personal best with 3.5 sacks. Also, Basham contributed 11 quarterback hits, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.
The former third-round pick in 2017 brings some viable tools to the Cowboys' pass rush. Basham is capable of playing with his hand in the dirt or he can stand up and rush the passer with his experience in a 3-4 scheme during his days with the New York Jets, giving defensive coordinator Dan Quinn another asset to mix into his gameplan.
Basham adds another solid piece to a Cowboys' defensive front seven that's making major waves this season.
