Dallas Cowboys fans are likely fond of the memory of their favorite team dominating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a lopsided 31-14 playoff win in January of this year. And while former Buc Leonard Fournette isn't as sympathetic to that memory, he will give the Cowboys his respect.
In a segment with NFL Network's Good Morning Football on Thursday, Fournette was presented with the following question by the crew: Which HC/QB duo do you trust more with the game on the line? Brian Daboll & Daniel Jones from the Giants? Or Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott from Dallas?
"I gotta go with Dallas," said Fournette thinking back to the last time he met them. "Their gameplan against us was (great) […] I'm just keeping it real."
Although the question was likely designed to get Fournette to talk about Prescott and McCarthy (defense might win championships but offenses get more views, especially in the middle of June), Lenny understandably focused on the Cowboys defense when asked about what it was like playing Dallas.
"They're very athletic and they're hard-working," admitted Fournette. "It felt different from the first game we played […] In the playoffs, they had a different game plan. Instead of Micah (Parsons) being on the line he was at linebacker."
As Fournette praised the Cowboys' adjustments, it was impossible not to think about what might be the most underrated strength on the team: The coaching staff. The jury is still out on how handing Mike McCarthy the keys to the offense will play out.
But we know McCarthy has done plenty of good to the Cowboys as he's led them to consecutive 12-win seasons. As for Dan Quinn, we don't even need to sing his song. Everyone remotely in tune with the NFL knows how special his defenses are.
It's a championship-caliber coaching staff. And it should be considered one of the biggest reasons to be excited about the 2023 Cowboys.
