San Francisco 49ers John Lynch sends a message about Trey Lance following his trade to the Dallas Cowboys.

Hours after the Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers, the latter team took the field against the Los Angeles Chargers.

During the broadcast, 49ers GM John Lynch was asked to talk about the unexpected trade that netted the same franchise that traded up to No. 3 overall in 2021 to pick Lance nothing but a fourth-round draft pick.

"Really hard day (to trade Trey Lance)," an emotional Lynch said on NFL Network. "Such a wonderful, young man. We took a shot and it didn't work out, we own that. We take accountability for it."

Lance will arrive at the Cowboys after losing out to Sam Darnold for the backup job to Brock Purdy in San Francisco. But Lynch doesn't believe this is the end of the road for the former first-round draft pick. In fact, he shared an encouraging message about the new quarterback in Dallas.

"His story is still very much unwritten," Lynch added. "I'm excited for Trey. Dallas stepped up and really wanted him. They came after him and I think it's going to be a great landing spot for him."

Of course, the Cowboys already have a starting quarterback in Dak Prescott. And despite imminent negotiations between him and the front office, Lance isn't realistically gunning for the QB1 job. Instead, Lance can eventually take over Cooper Rush's backup job (not that that's guaranteed considering the young player's struggles) and with some patience from Mike McCarthy's coaching staff, perhaps he could flourish down the road just in case the franchise needs some flexibility.

Lynch explained on air that when it comes to Lance's shortcomings in San Francisco, it was more about circumstances than it was about the quarterback himself.

"I can tell everybody it wasn't from lack of effort on Trey's part or on our part that it didn't work out," the 49ers GM said. "Circumstances took hold, he struggled through injuries, this team is ready to win, and we like our quarterback room."

The Cowboys aren't expected to play Lance in their preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders but he's expected to make the 53-man roster as the third quarterback on the team. Rush will be forced to defend his QB2 job while Lance learns a new offense following two years under Kyle Shanahan.
