The Dallas Cowboys have a big, big hole in their secondary where Anthony Brown used to be.
Since the outside cornerback went down injured in Week 13 against the Indianapolis Colts, Dan Quinn has looked for a replacement for the six-year veteran.
It's only fair to say he's still looking.
The Cowboys have played Kelvin Joseph, Nahshon Wright, DaRon Bland (who starts inside as the nickel CB), and even Trayvon Mullen at outside cornerback over the last few weeks.
None of them has inspired confidence at the position and even less so as the Cowboys prepare to face a quarterback who's an expert in exploiting your one weakness in the defensive backfield, Tom Brady.
Heading into their playoff match against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it was a matter of figuring out the starting lineup.
"Over the last few weeks, you guys have heard me discuss that we're going to try a couple of different combinations at different spots," Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn told reporters on Monday.
"It's not always comfortable," added Quinn. "But I've never been one to be worried about being comfortable with the uncomfortable."
So, who starts at CB?
The Cowboys defensive coordinator declined to disclose who's going to start at cornerback opposite Trevon Diggs against Tampa Bay.
But the team is clearly short on options.
The Cowboys could line up second-year player Nahshon Wright, who's made a few big plays with three forced incompletions and an interception but has been a liability in coverage at times.
Starting recently-signed Trayvon Mullen would be a surprise after allowing a 52-yard grab last Sunday in just 14 coverage snaps. Meanwhile, Kelvin Joseph hasn't gotten significant play since the Cowboys' loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and appears to have lost his claim at the starting gig.
That leaves the door open for a surprise. After all, the Cowboys signed former first-team All-Pro Xavier Rhodes earlier this month.
The three-time Pro Bowler has made a good impression on Dan Quinn.
"Good news is we had the most tape on Xavier where we could evaluate him in different spots," the Cowboys DC told reporters. "Man, can he pick it up fast. I was blown away by football instincts right away."
Quinn added that he'd have a better idea of where Rhodes is at toward the end of the week and whether or not he could have a role in the Cowboys' playoff game.
Rhodes recently became available when the Buffalo Bills waived him after the veteran played two games for them. It's important to point out it was more of a roster management move than a consequence of Rhode's play.
The former Minnesota Viking – who has ties with Cowboys assistant coach George Edwards – provides experience and might just be the best option for Dallas even if he hasn't played a game with the team.
Although he's well past his prime, Rhodes was one of the best cornerbacks in the league at one point in his career.
Don't be surprised if the Cowboys start a new face against the Bucs.
