In case you missed it, the Dallas Cowboys drafted running back Deuce Vaughn out of Kansas State on the third day of the 2023 NFL Draft.
And while Vaughn is a dynamic playmaker that can be a swiss-army knife for the team's offense (he put up impressive rushing and receiving tape at college), the moment was made particularly epic because he and his dad shared a truly unique moment.
Deuce's dad is named Chris Vaughn and he happens to work as a scout for the Cowboys. So you can imagine the team had a pretty heartwarming moment in the War Room when they made the call to their sixth-round draft pick. But the team made it even better when it posted a great behind-the-scenes look at the call.
And wouldn't you know it? It's Chris Vaughn who got to make the call to his son to ask what both maybe only had dreamed about: "You want to come to work with me next week?"
"I wouldn't mind that at all," replied Deuce Vaughn, one of the newest members of the Cowboys.
During the phone call, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fought back tears while reinforcing to Vaughn what should be obvious to anyone paying attention: The kid has earned every ounce of this.
This isn't some sort of feel-good draft pick the Cowboys are making, it just happens to feel that way. But the team took Vaughn because he's a baller. Although he's the shortest player to ever be measured at the Scouting Combine, Vaughn has the explosiveness and elusiveness to make it in the NFL. He's already being compared to Darren Sproles.
Per ESPN's Todd Archer, his father didn't even write a report or hand in a grade on his son. The Cowboys knew what the implications of that were and just let him be sidelined when it came to Deuce.
"I've been doing this a long time, this is so special," Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy told his new running back.
"One of the coolest things I've seen in football was your dad making that call," added OC Brian Schottenheimer.
That was indeed something special. Deuce Vaughn hopes his career also is exactly that. Special. It sure has been so thus far.
