On Saturday, Dallas Cowboys fans booed from the stands during training camp practice for good reason.
Kickers Tristan Vizcaino and Brandon Aubrey were at the center of Mike McCarthy's Mojo Moment, a high-stakes, situational football scenario that randomly takes place every practice. This time, the theme was having the offense run one play to get the kicker closer for a field goal as the clock ran out.
Vizcaino and Aubrey combined one field goal in six attempts. Aubrey got the lone score. Two days following the loud Oxnard boos, Dallas Morning News' Michael Gehlken is reporting the Cowboys are releasing Vizcaino.
Per ESPN's Todd Archer, Vizcaino went 22-for-35 in training camp before his release. The 27-year-old first arrived in Dallas following Brett Maher's disastrous playoff night in Tampa Bay in January. However, Maher was given the chance against the San Francisco 49ers and Vizcaino was brought back in the offseason.
These days, the Cowboys wish they had Maher – now on the Denver Broncos – on the roster.
Entering Week 1 of the NFL preseason, the Cowboys only have former USFL standout Brandon Aubrey on the roster. Aubrey, who is a former first-rounder for Major League Soccer, didn't start kicking footballs until his USFL stint in 2022, where he's a two-time champion.
Unfortunately, Aubrey's camp isn't off to a much better start. On Saturday, he was 1-for-3 during the Mojo Moment. One of the misses was wide left while the second one fell short of the goalposts.
Cowboys special teams coordinator John Fassel said earlier this year that the team was looking at "anyone else on Earth" to fill the vacancy at kicker. That hasn't changed days away from the preseason opener.
