One of the key needs for the Dallas Cowboys was to get another linebacker, and they didn't let Day 2 of the NFL Draft end without doing so.
Dallas took DeMarvion Overshown out of Texas with the 90th overall pick in the third round.
Overshown played in 39 games in five seasons at Texas. He put up 249 tackles (30.5 tackles for loss), nine sacks, forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. The athleticism and coverage skills of Overshown assisted in him getting three interceptions and 17 pass breakups.
With 2022 being his final collegiate year, Overshown put together a fantastic campaign. He registered 96 tackles (10 tackles for loss) four sacks, and five pass breakups and was named first-team All-Big 12.
Tyler Browning' of A To Z Sports broke down Overshown's game:
Block Shedding: Doesn’t show a natural aggression when deconstructing blocks in the open field. Would rather finesse the blocker or bounce off of them to make the stop. Does show the ability to stack and shed. Blitzing/Pass Rush: Incredibly explosive when he triggers down hill. Takes good advantage of open holes in the offensive line, it’s when an offensive lineman steps in to fill that hole is where the issue arrives. He is often knocked off balance by late pulling offensive lineman and rendered inactive in the play. Doesn’t have a refined move set when rushing the passer. Run Defense: Doesn’t take on contact very well, but he is constantly making sure the RB is accounted for on play action calls. If he has a free lane he will make the stop, it’s when there is an offensive lineman in front of him the issue starts to arise. Has times of relying on his teammates to make the stop and holds back effort, when the ball carrier breaks loose he is left playing catchup. Toughness/Power @ POA: Lacks any real power at the POA, would rather charge at the offensive lineman and bounce off of them, then use that momentum to make the stop. You don’t see him overwhelm blockers with power moves at all.
The Athletic's Dane Brugler on Overshown:
Plays with the explosive range of a former safety to make plays at either sideline … can really run and looks like he was shot out of a cannon when he pulls the trigger in pursuit … mirrors with ease laterally to find run lanes … his downhill speed as a blitzer is a tough ask for any offensive lineman in space … flexible movements to avoid and slip blocks … fierce tackler, and doesn’t hold back at contact … seeks out the de-cleating hit, but also judicial about dishing out his play violence … can run with backs or tight ends in coverage … has the speed and mentality to be a core special teamer … logged 472 special teams snaps in his career, including a career-high 147 snaps as a senior (five tackles) … finished his career with 30.5 tackles for loss … experienced at multiple positions
