Football fever is in the air as the Dallas Cowboys begin OTAs this week. However, a question mark still needs to be taken care of soon.
The Cowboys are currently looking to upgrade the kicker position. So, Dallas has been pounding the pavement, and Special teams coordinator John Fassel spoke about where the team was at in their search nearly two weeks ago.
"Well, we've got Tristan on the roster. Anybody else on earth who is not on the team right now is under consideration. That's everybody really. … That could be a lot of different guys that we're still looking at — XFL, USFL, veterans on the street, younger guys who still haven't found a way."-Nick Eatman, DallasCowboys.com
Fassel also mentioned that veterans Mason Crosby, Robbie Gould, and Ryan Succop were on the market. As of Tuesday, there's another name to add to that list.
Brandon McManus, who has spent the previous nine years with the Denver Broncos has been released.
Brett Maher had his struggles in 2022, and it got to the point that he missed four extra points in the Cowboys playoff win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season which led to him no longer being on the roster. The Cowboys have Tristan Vizcaino, but he's still very inexperienced with only 12 field attempts during his three years in the NFL.
McManus missed eight field goals last season which isn't ideal. However, five of them were over 50 yards and McManus was 20 for 23 from under that distance, including a perfect 10 out of 10 from 40-49 yards (he was 26 for 26 from this distance over the last three seasons).
This isn't to say that McManus would be a long-term solution for the Cowboys at kicker but it wouldn't hurt them to pick up the phone and see if something can get done.
