The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver corps is loaded entering the 2023 NFL season.
CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Michael Gallup are the clear-cut starters of the group as the position looks for a bounce-back season. The addition of Cooks could provide Dak Prescott's offense the speed it's been missing while plain old time could provide Gallup with a healthier version of himself following a disappointing season.
But from here until the regular season, it will be the bottom of the depth chart that proves the most fun to monitor closely. That's in big part thanks to Simi Fehoko, who's aiming for a bigger role this year.
The 25-year-old entering his third season in the league is visibly excited about Mike McCarthy taking over the offense. And for good reason. After all, Fehoko is well acquainted with the West Coast offensive scheme, which is McCarthy's bread and butter.
"I came from a West Coast offense, Stanford is obviously West Coast, but that was David Shaw and his offense," Fehoko told Jess Nevarez in the Blogging the Boys podcast network.
A quick look at Fehoko suggests he's a great fit for such a scheme. His combination of size and speed could be perfect for what the Cowboys are trying to do on offense, which could go a long way for him in winning the battle for WR4.
It will be a hard-fought battle as Simi will have to beat out second-year player Jalen Tolbert, who came up short of expectations last year as he learned the position.
"Making that switch with McCarthy calling the plays and the way that he's been installing things and the different terminology, it's been like a breath of fresh air," added Fehoko. "It's like picking it back up to where I was before, it's been a smooth transition for myself."
That familiarity with the West Coast could give Fehoko a unique advantage over his teammates when training camp starts. With only 10 games to his name and just 43 offensive snaps, he'll be starting from zero.
The biggest question about the unproven wide receiver is whether or not he can stay healthy. If he is, many consider him the favorite to earn the WR4 job.
As far as what Cowboys fans can expect from McCarthy's offense, Fehoko isn't giving away too much.
"I'm very positive that a lot of us are very happy with the way that things are going and the way the plays are going to be called," Fehoko concluded. "(The wide receivers) are ready to light it up."
