The Dallas Cowboys made some big moves this offseason in hopes of getting over the hump and reaching the next level in the NFL Playoffs. That includes making a swing for a player that should only bolster the defense even further.
Dallas made a move for Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore during the free agency period. Rather than signing an adequate player on the market, the Cowboys opted to add a proven veteran to the roster.
Although he's not in his prime anymore, Gilmore turned in a strong season with the Indianapolis Colts last season and provides the Cowboys with a legitimate defensive back opposite of Trevon Diggs. In fact, Pro Football Focus ranks Gilmore as one of the best in the NFL.
PFF analyst Sam Monson ranked the top-32 cornerbacks in the league. To no surprise, the Cowboys have two in the top-10 of the list. The bigger surprise is where the two are ranked.
Gilmore lands at No. 6 in the rankings. Monson notes that while the veteran may not be at the same caliber that he was at when he won Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, he's still a big-time player in the secondary.
There was a stretch where Gilmore was the best cornerback in football, and while that may be in the past now, he showed in each of his past two stops that he can still play at a very high level. For the Colts, Gilmore recorded an 81.1 PFF coverage grade and allowed an 82.6 passer rating from 82 targets. He now gets the benefit of playing opposite Trevon Diggs in Dallas in 2023.
Meanwhile, Diggs lands at No. 8 in the rankings. Diggs has earned the reputation as one of the elite ballhawks in football and is a big reason why he has emerged as an All-Pro defender.
Diggs didn’t have the same gaudy interception stats in 2022 as he did the year before, but he was a better overall player. Over the past two seasons, he has given up some big plays but is a ballhawk and a dangerous cornerback to test. His play may see a boost this season with Stephon Gilmore on the other side keeping defenses honest.
Two cornerbacks ranked inside the top-10 is exciting for the Dallas Cowboys. It is more evidence of how the team swing for the fences and hit a home run this offseason while only giving up a day-three draft selection.
Add in slot corners DaRon Bland and Jourdan Lewis, as well as safeties, Jayron Kearse, Donovan Wilson, and Malim Hooker, and the Cowboys have quite the secondary, Dan Quinn has to be licking his chops.
