NOTE: Hours after the publishing of this article, the Cowboys’ hire of Mike Zimmer was finally confirmed as official. Dallas has their man.

Multiple reporters with the utmost credibility including Adam Schefter, Tom Pelissero, and Todd Archer have all pointed toward Mike Zimmer becoming the next defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys following Dan Quinn's departure from the team.

But the two parties have seemed to hit a speedbump that has led to many pointing out that it's not a done deal just yet. According to Rex Ryan, who also interviewed for the position during the Cowboys' search, nothing is set in stone yet.

On Sunday's pregame show from ESPN leading up to Super Bowl LVIII, Ryan dropped an eyebrow-raising nugget: "I'm not so sure Zimmer has got that job right now, not real sure about that. I can honestly say I don't believe that's a fact right now."

My initial reaction to Ryan's comments, which I mentioned on my daily show A to Z Sports Dallas Primetime before the Super Bowl was somewhere along the lines of "Rex Ryan has to be in denial or something."

But lost on Sunday's Super Bowl hype in the hours leading up to an epic showdown between the Chiefs and 49ers, former Cowboys scout and current insider for 105.3 The Fan Bryan Broaddus made a big revelation.

Broaddus indicated there's an actual holdup on contract negotiations with Zimmer. Broaddus didn't add too much context but did detail on Twitter/X that it was contract related.

Additionally, Adam Schefter himself amended his original report on Zimmer during Monday's The Pat McAfee Show saying that although he still expects the deal to get done, it is "not yet" so.

So here we are, folks. The Cowboys and Zimmer are probably stuck on a contract/financial detail with the scouting combine and the start of free agency in the not-too-far horizon.

Is the former Vikings HC asking for a lot of money or is Dallas low-balling him? We can't be sure. But if it's the latter, which I'd bet it is considering how the front office operates, it'd be a tough look on a franchise that's trying to convince it's fanbase that they're going all-in.

Lowballing the defensive coordinator of your choice? Yikes. That will go a long way convincing your fanbase you're for real this time around (not).
