The Dallas Cowboys have several players that are eligible for new deals including Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Trevon Diggs.
Another one up for a new contract, running back Tony Pollard, has already signed the franchise tag that will pay him $10.1 million in 2023. However, the Cowboys are looking at the long-term when it comes to his future.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported on Sunday during SportsCenter that there's interest between the Cowboys and Pollard to lock in the former fourth-round pick for years to come.
"He's in a situation, I'm told, where he's looking at this as a win-win because he signed his franchise tag tender at the $10.1 million clip. He's injured, coming off ankle surgery, so he's got that security regardless," Fowler said. "But if the Cowboys want to step up and try to do a long-term deal he's certainly open to that. Nothing moving on that yet but there's a lot of time before that July 17 deadline. Certainly, both sides are expected to reconvene and talk about a potential long-term deal. The Cowboys would love to get his cap hit down a little bit so they could sign some other players."-Tyler Conway, Bleacher Report
After years of being the RB2 to Ezekiel Elliott, it was apparent that the Cowboys had to transition more to Pollard last season with the former suffering a knee injury for the second consecutive year. Pollard flourished by leading the team with 1,007 rushing yards and averaged over five yards per carry for the third time in four seasons.
As Conway mentioned, Pollard is recovering from a broken leg that he suffered in the Cowboys' playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers back in January. So, the Cowboys certainly have to think about what kind of long-term commitment they want to make, especially with Elliott’s decline after the first year of his big deal in 2019.
Pollard is a special weapon, though, and the Cowboys would be foolish not to want him on the roster as long as possible. If Pollard gets done soon, it will speed up the process on the other possible long-term deals the Cowboys have on the table with his cap number reduced, so they'd be killing two birds with one stone.
