Dallas Cowboys special teams coordinator John Fassel said it all about the team's situation at kicker with a simple yet very telling quote: "I think anybody else on Earth who's not on the team right now is under consideration."
For a few days this week, that criteria included Super Bowl-winning kicker Brandon McManus. The nine-year veteran who was released by the Denver Broncos was immediately pegged as a target for the Cowboys as he's got the experience and consistency the team is looking for.
However, McManus is officially off the market following the latest NFL news: The Jacksonville Jaguars are signing him ahead of the 2023 season.
As of right now, the Cowboys have only one rostered kicker on the team: Tristan Vizcaino. The 26-year-old kicker has only 12 career field goal attempts and is a big question mark for the team.
The Cowboys originally signed Vizcaino following Brett Maher's disastrous playoff performance in Tampa Bay where he missed an NFL-record four extra points. However, the team still played Maher in the Divisional Round against the San Francisco 49ers, where he made two field goals and missed another extra point.
It wouldn't be a surprise if the Cowboys reunited with Maher considering his numbers are better than every big-name free agent currently available (yes, including Robbie Gould and Mason Crosby).
By the way, McManus' release led to Brett Maher trying out with the Broncos along with other kickers.
Speaking of tryouts, expect the Cowboys to put some together for kickers right away in OTAs. This is a position of need for the team and Vizcaino has a lot to prove before being the clear front-runner for the job.
