In a surprise trade on Friday afternoon, the Dallas Cowboys are reportedly sending a fourth-round draft pick for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Earlier this week, Lance was announced to have lost the backup job in San Francisco to Sam Darnold. As a result, the 49ers started seeking trade options for the quarterback they picked third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Lance arrives at an interesting time at Dallas as the backup quarterback job seemed to belong to Cooper Rush, who has won five of six career starts for the Cowboys. As the coaching staff figures out exactly what it's got in Lance, the team could very well carry three quarterbacks on its roster.

The trade is bound to get everyone talking about the Cowboys and Dak Prescott, who always seems to be under a stricter microscope than other quarterbacks in the league. In reality, the franchise has been all-in in Dak for years now, and trading for Lance is highly unlikely to change any of that.

During the 2023 NFL Draft, the Cowboys were seemingly interested in mid and late-round quarterback prospects like Max Duggan (TCU) and Aidan O'Connell (Purdue). In Lance, they could be finding that young, developmental quarterback they didn't find back in April.

That being said, the Cowboys and Prescott are in an intriguing situation when it comes to the salary cap. Prescott is set to count for $59 million in next year's cap space, a number that will likely need to be brought down through a contract extension.
