The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of work to do between now and the 2024 NFL Draft but mock draft season is here and there's nothing we can do to stop it.
Recently, A to Z Sports' own Destin Adams put together a two-round mock after spending all of last week in Mobile, Alabama at the Senior Bowl.
One of the most intriguing teams in his mock had to be the Cowboys as he had them doing something uncharacteristic of them: Pulling off a big draft day trade in Round 1.
In this scenario, Adams predicted a trade back for the Cowboys, sending pick No. 24 to the Minnesota Vikings. In return, Dallas landed pick 42 (2nd), 108 (4th), and a second rounder in 2025. The Vikings grab QB J.J. McCarthy from Michigan after trading up.
Before we dive into the trade itself, let's look at their picks. The Cowboys addressed two positions of need, including wide receiver and interior defensive lineman. This is a refreshing approach as the consensus prediction right now is Dallas takes an offensive lineman in the first.
- Pick 42: Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas (TRADE)
- Pick 56: Leonard Taylor III, IDL, Miami
Here's what Adams had to say about the Cowboys' mock draft:
I have the Cowboys trading out of the first round and adding two day two picks this year and one next year. The funny thing is a player I believe they would consider in the first is Texas WR Adonai Mitchell, who is also the pick here at 42. I think Mitchell’s skill set would complement CeeDee Lamb’s game really well. And with it looking like the Cowboys are going to tie themselves to Dak Prescott long term, I think they will look to get younger at wideout, with Mitchell being the WR two over Brandin Cooks.
Whatever the Cowboys do at wide receiver will be interesting as it'll reveal a lot about what they make out of Jalen Tolbert, among other young ones. This is expected to be a deep WR class so it could be comfortably addressed in Day 2.
"I've been told that many believe that WRs will fly off the board in the first three rounds, and the Senior Bowl had multiple WRs who helped their draft stock," wrote Adams in his Senior Bowl takeaways.
Trading back wouldn't be a crazy idea, even with an 'all-in' mindset
I am well aware Cowboys fans won't love the prediction given this is supposed to be an "all-in" type year for Dallas. Why not target a plug-and-play type player in the first, then?
But let me play devil's advocate for a second here: The Cowboys don't have a lot of Day 3 draft ammo after trading their fourth round pick away for Trey Lance last year. A second-rounder in 2025 wouldn't be a bad idea if they decide to blow it all up after the upcoming season. It could provide a solid insurance policy if the team goes into rebuilding mode following 2024.
Now granted, it would be a questionable move as a fourth rounder might be less valuable this year as it's one of the thinnest classes in years after fewer underclassmen declared because of NIL.
Lastly, the Cowboys value their draft picks a whole lot and I'd be surprised if they make such a big jump back in April.
