The Dallas Cowboys have several of their top players that are up for contract extensions, highlighted by quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Lamb's draft mate, cornerback Trevon Diggs, is also eligible for a new deal. His current market value is $15.4 annually according to Spotrac.
Pro Football Focus projected a four-year extension for $81 million ($20.25 per year) with $57.5 million in guaranteed money for Diggs last month. Now, PFF not only feels the Cowboys should extend Diggs, but he should be priority No.1 in Dallas.
Dallas has a handful of massive contracts to dole out soon, but being proactive with Diggs could actually make that endeavor easier in the long run, with the ability to get a better value and stagger cash payouts for CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, Dak Prescott and others.-Brad Spielberger, PFF
Dallas is currently in a position to take care of this bit of important business easily. They have the seventh most cap space in the NFL at $20.45 million, so they can still lock down other guys if Diggs gets his bag first.
There's been a silly narrative that Diggs is a liability in coverage floating around for quite some time. However, Diggs has 17 interceptions over his first three seasons which is the most in the NFL over that span, and his 49 pass breakups rank second.
Diggs showed last season that he can shut down the best receivers in the league.
In Week 2 when he was covering Ja'Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals, Diggs only allowed two receptions for 14 yards in coverage. Also, he ran up against Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings in Week 11 and gave up just two receptions for 19 yards. That's two guys who are considered to be top-five receivers that Diggs put the clamps on in 2022.
Long story short, Diggs has more than earned a contract extension in Dallas, and the sooner they can get that done the better.
Cowboys are getting a head start on some important business
This is fantastic news.
