It's been three years since the Dallas Cowboys drafted cornerback Trevon Diggs with the 51st overall pick. That's more than enough data to come to an accurate analysis of his play.

Diggs has not only lived up to where he was drafted, he should've been a Day 1 selection as his 17 interceptions rank first and his 49 pass breakups are the second most over the last three seasons.

As a second-round pick, Diggs is entering a contract year, and Dallas has already begun preliminary talks with him about a long-term agreement. According to Pro Football Focus, a deal for Diggs is likely to reset the stage as far as the market goes when it comes to cornerbacks in the future.

We wrote about Diggs earlier this offseason, and he’s a fascinating case study as one of the most boom-or-bust playmakers in the sport. He’s undoubtedly among the game’s best outside cornerbacks and draws plenty of tough assignments, but the calculated gambles he takes can lead to some blown coverages and wide-open targets. You’ll gladly take those plays when they’re a byproduct of Diggs’ ability to flip the field at any moment, showing off hands that his older brother Stefon would be proud of as one of the league’s best wide receivers.

Can Diggs reset the cornerback market, a market that quietly hasn’t grown much since Jalen Ramsey’s $20 million-per-year extension in 2020? Is Dallas willing to dole out a top-of-market deal with CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons in need of monster new contracts as well? –Brad Spielberger, PFF

The proposed deal the PFF came up with for Diggs was a four-year extension for $81 million ($20.25 million per year). Diggs would surpass Ramsey on the pay scale and he would be right between Cleveland's Denzel Ward and Green Bay's Jaire Alexander as their deals in 2022 are currently paying them $20.1 and $21 million annually.

No matter what the opinion is on Diggs, and the negative ones are silly, he's one of the best cornerbacks in the league, and the way he can turn the momentum of a game around at any moment with an interception or even a defensive score can't be denied.

Once Diggs gets his huge payday, which will be soon, he'll be compensated well and will reset the cornerback market. Make no mistake about it, though, he doesn't want that to happen anywhere else.

"Hopefully something gets figured out," Diggs said, via The Athletic. "I love Dallas. I love being here. So, I don't know. We'll see."

The Cowboys generally like to get these types of things figured out around the time training commences so the contract situation with Diggs it's certainly something to keep an eye on.
