The Dallas Cowboys have nearly perfected how to create turnovers as they have led the NFL in that category in each of the last two seasons (67 turnovers).
Trevon Diggs and his ability to take the ball away has been a major reason why, but there are still plenty who still doubt his skill set. Diggs is either loved immensely or he's called overrated, there's no in-between in most cases.
ESPN recently released its list of the 10 best cornerbacks in the league. Diggs got his just due, in a way, as he landed at the No. 8 spot.
8. Trevon Diggs
Highest ranking: 3 | Lowest ranking: Unranked
The classic risk-reward corner, Diggs can tilt the game with a splashy interception or engender queasiness with his chance-taking.
As one NFL personnel evaluator pointed out, all offensive coordinators should run plenty of double moves on Diggs to make him bite.
But it's hard to argue with 49 pass breakups and 17 interceptions since 2020. Teams value ball production, and Diggs has it. That's why several voters put him in their top three.
"I think he's gotten better at gambling overall. It's still a hindrance to his game, in my opinion," an NFC personnel man said. "I think if he can be more calculated with his ways he can be viewed more like an Asante Samuel Sr."
An explosive corner, Diggs has reached 20-plus mph on 36 different plays since 2020, which tops the league, per Next Gen Stats. –Jeremy Fowler, ESPN
The voting for this list and the others that have been coming out via ESPN over the last few days are made up of 80 different voters ranging from coaches, execs, and scouts. So these are respected minds and voices in the NFL.
That is what makes a part of the analysis on Diggs so mind-blowing. Someone didn't have Diggs ranked among the best cornerbacks in football. Like, is this the twilight zone?
Yes, Diggs has given up some big plays, and double moves have gotten him in trouble at times. But just based on what he did last season against Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase and Minnesota's Justin Jefferson when he allowed four receptions for 33 yards total between both wide receivers kills the notion that Diggs isn't one of the league's top cover guys.
Diggs has intercepted the ball at a higher rate than anyone and he's defended the second most passes in the NFL since his rookie campaign, and that's with five games missed. Also, what gets forgotten is that Diggs didn't become a full-time cornerback until his sophomore year at Alabama.
The playmaking savvy and ball skills of Diggs are second to none and he's certainly on the shortlist of the top corners in the league.
