The Dallas Cowboys getting back to being one of the top offensive lines in the NFL, and drafting Tyler Smith in 2022 has been a big reason why.
Coming out of Tulsa, Smith was selected in the first round, albeit to much ridicule, to be the future at left tackle. However, during training camp last year he was battling Connor McGovern for starting duties at left guard with the hopes that Tyron Smith, the normal starter at left tackle, would be relatively healthy.
Playing multiple positions can be a challenge, especially for a rookie. But Smith got some great advice to help him along the way.
It can't (matter)," Smith said, via the team's website. "The best thing for me – Zack (Martin) talked about it last year – is just being comfortable at both spots. I feel like having those reps last year, being in those situations last year where I was switching back and forth, it really helped me as a player.
Smith did his thing at left tackle in his 1,022 snaps last season with his elder namesake missing 13 games. With the shuffling on the Cowboys' offensive line that took place, Smith also logged 121 snaps at left guard, and he didn't miss a beat.
Position flex is a valuable asset for offensive linemen to have, and it served Smith well when he had to switch spots.
Being put under those high-stress situations where you might not have practiced it or used to it, but it's good being able to adapt to that sudden change," Smith said. "That could be the difference in losing by one and winning by one. That's the most important thing.
When the Cowboys began minicamp earlier this month, Tyron started at left tackle and Tyler slid inside the left guard. This made sense in case a miracle happens and the elder statesman doesn't miss significant time for the first time since 2016, but if he does, the youngster has an entire season of reps under his belt that will serve him well if he has to slide back outside.
No matter where Smith plays in 2023, it's clear that the Cowboys have found a great cornerstone piece on their offensive line for years to come, and seeing as he's on the left side, quarterback Dak Prescott will have his blindside well protected.
