The Dallas Cowboys have decided that Tony Pollard is the team's top running back after placing the franchise tag on him and parting ways with Ezekiel Elliott.
Dallas has also created some stiff competition for RB2 duties as Ronald Jones, Malik Davis, and Rico Dowdle will battle it out. However, the Cowboys are expected to add another player from the NFL draft to this mix, and Ole Miss running back Zach Evans could be him as he has a top-30 visit set up.
Evans is no stranger to the Lone Star State.
During his high school days in Houston, Evans turned himself into a five-star recruit and was ranked the top player in Texas going into the college ranks in 2020. Evans originally committed to play at Georgia but his college career started at TCU.
Evans played in nine games as a freshman and produced 415 yards and four touchdowns on 54 carries. A toe injury limited Evans to six games in 2021, but he led the Horned Frogs with 648 yards rushing and added five scores.
There wouldn't be a third season for Evans in Fort Worth as he entered the transfer portal and ended up at Ole Miss. He was only there for one season, but Evans racked up 936 yards and nine touchdowns in 2022, and he did so despite splitting time with SEC Freshman of the Year Quinshon Judkins as well as dealing with a hip injury plus a concussion.
Evans is an explosive runner that also possesses power and elusiveness once he's in the open field. He can be extremely patient when he's running which allows him to find the best open spot to gain yardage.
One area that Evans can get better at is the passing game. He only amassed 325 receiving yards in college. However, the Cowboys are implementing some principles of the west coast offense in 2023 so Evans could benefit from that style of play.
Evans will likely be selected on the second or third day of the draft. So, if he ends up being a player the Cowboys have a strong eye on they can address some other needs before drafting him.
