Linebacker Kyle Van Noy is looking for a new home, again.
This comes after the nine-year veteran recently mentioned that his future with the New England Patriots was uncertain.
"There are a lot of decisions to be made … I'm under contract for one more year, but you never know," Van Noy said.
On Tuesday, Van Noy was released by the Patriots, which saves New England $4.1 million in cap space.
The Cowboys have a need at linebacker, with Leighton Vander Each and Keanu Neal headed for free agency. If they add one before the draft, it will have to be within the restrictions of the conservative spending habits of Stephen Jones.
According to Jared Dubin of CBS Sports, Van Noy is an ideal fit in Dallas.
"The Cowboys typically do not go big-name shopping in free agency. They're also very conscientious about how their signings affect the compensatory pick formula. Kyle Van Noy was cut by the Patriots, so they can sign him without having to worry about that. With Leighton Vander Esch likely not being re-signed, Dallas needs some veteran help at this spot. Van Noy has shown flexibility to play linebacker and rush the passer, which would make him a good partner for Micah Parsons."
Van Noy was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2014 in the second round. In October of 2016, Van Noy and a seventh-round pick were sent to the Patriots in exchange for a sixth-round pick. It turned out great for Van Noy as he ended up a part of the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history when the Patriots overcame a 28-3 deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons.
2018 would be a memorable season for Van Noy. He set a career-high with 92 tackles and tallied 3.5 sacks. Van Noy would be a part of a defense that tied a Super Bowl record for the fewest points allowed (3) as the Patriots won their third title in five seasons against the Los Angeles Rams, who recently won a title in February.
Van Noy had another productive year in 2019 when he set a career-high with 6.5 sacks. But he left the Patriots and wound up signing a four-year, $51 million deal with the Miami Dolphins in March of 2020. Van Noy had a good year with 69 tackles and six sacks, but he was released last March after just one season.
This led to a second stint with New England for Van Noy as he inked a two-year deal worth up to $13.2 million. He had another successful season with 66 tackles and five sacks, but much like his time with the Dolphins, Van Noy is once again looking for employment just one season into his deal.
Van Noy would bring a ton of experience to Dallas with 73 career starts. It would also give the Cowboys another starter at the linebacker position to go along with Parsons in 2022. When adding Jabril Cox to the mix, who is recovering from a torn ACL, Dallas would field quite the trio at linebacker going forward. With the chance to add another in the NFL draft.
The cost to acquire Van Noy wouldn't be much for Dallas as he enters his ninth season in the NFL, and that makes him a free agent the Cowboys may want to pursue.
