Dallas Cowboys safety Jayron Kearse threw a curveball at fans when media members spotted him wearing No. 27 in practice during the first week of OTAs.
After all, Kearse was loud on social media during the offseason about wearing No. 0 following the rule changes across the NFL that now allows players to use it. At one point, Micah Parsons even got in on the fun by sharing a picture of him wearing the 0 before Kearse replied to him "Too late."
Even the Cowboys website made it official by claiming "Kearse has officially been awarded No. 0 for the 2023 season." So what happened? Is it just a paperwork thing before the veteran ends up changing jerseys? Nope, says Kearse.
"When you see ballgames in September, I'm going to be 27," Kearse told reporters on Thursday. "I'm wearing 27."
Why the sudden change of heart? Kearse kept it ambiguous by claiming it was a matter of "logistical things that we weren't able to work out."
If you allow me to speculate, I'll say he could be doing third-round rookie DeMarvion Overshown a solid. With the Texas Longhorns, Overshown switched to No. 0 in college and even boasted the "Agent Zero" nickname.
Although the rookie is currently wearing No. 35, he's a prime candidate to make the switch later this offseason.
As Kearse comes back from offseason surgery, what number is on his back is the least of his concerns. He's entering a contract year and after being a centerpiece of Dan Quinn's defense in back-to-back years, he's eyeing a chance to cash in like his colleague Donovan Wilson did earlier in the year.
