The Dallas Cowboys had a very quiet trade deadline as they stayed put and didn't pull the trigger on any transaction despite many other NFC contenders bolstering their rosters through trades.

It turns out the Cowboys could've been closer to making a deal than we would've thought. At the very least, one NFL team considered dialing them up.

The Minnesota Vikings held a "brief discussion about perhaps calling" Dallas to trade for quarterback Trey Lance, The Athletic's Diana Russini reported on Saturday. The report doesn't detail how serious of a discussion was it or if the Vikings even made a call.

We do know the Vikings ended up targeting another signal-caller as they ended up getting Joshua Dobbs in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals with Kyler Murray nearing a return.

It sure would've been interesting to see what the Cowboys would've gotten in exchange for Lance, whom they traded a fourth-round draft pick for in the preseason. With the urgency the Vikings had following Kirk Cousins' season-ending injury, perhaps the front office would've been able to land an immediate profit off of such an exchange. A third-round pick, maybe? Maybe a second? We'll never know.

Lance has been inactive for every game this season, suiting up as the emergency quarterback. It's been clear from the start the Cowboys wanted to be patient with him, developing in the background in case they need him in the future. Lance struggled with seeing the field right during his final weeks as a 49ers quarterback but has the physical attributes to be a high-end player down the road.

It remains unclear if the Cowboys will give him the nod as QB2 any time soon over Cooper Rush, who hasn't looked great when seeing the field in garbage time this year.

Cowboys did seek a trade before Week 9

Additionally, Russini reported the Cowboys did work the phones at the NFL trade deadline despite Jerry Jones claiming they were only waiting for other teams to call them.

Russini revealed that "they were hunting for a linebacker, as we have seen Dallas is thin at the position."

As of right now, Damone Clark and Markquese Bell (who is on a meteoric rise) are the team's starters at linebacker with Leighton Vander Esch on Injured Reserve and Rashaan Evans being eased into the defense. The unit could certainly use depth but it will be tough to find impact players moving forward.
