The Dallas Cowboys announced an unexpected roster move on Thursday by waiving linebacker Devin Harper ahead of Week 4 of the season.
The move comes as a big surprise as Harper has the third-highest special teams snap count on the Cowboys at 64%. He trails only C.J. Goodwin and Juanyeh Thomas in this category.
Moving on from Harper (at least for now) makes a group of small-sized special team players even smaller.
The transaction opens up a spot on the Cowboys' 53-man roster which could be used in a variety of ways. The team could promote backup center Brock Hoffman to the team's roster as his practice squad elevations have run out after three weeks. Then again, the team has two more centers on the practice squad, including the recently-signed Billy Price, which makes it difficult to understand what the team's plans are at the position.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys will be left with two (actual) linebackers on the 53: Leighton Vander Esch and Damone Clark. Safety Markquese Bell has been playing the position, as well. The team also has Malik Jefferson in the practice squad, who could be called up in the next few weeks.
Linebacker was clearly an issue versus the Arizona Cardinals as the Cowboys consistently missed on second-level assignments. One has to wonder if the team would consider outside help as well but it's only fair to point out they usually stick with their guys.
For now, the Cowboys have 52 players on their roster ahead of Sunday's game versus the New England Patriots. Expect more roster moves before then.
