Cowboys' free agency is off to a good start but they must get a wide receiver
The Dallas Cowboys have a clear need at the position and they must address it as soon as possible.
The Dallas Cowboys have had a very solid free agency so far. Less than one week into it, we've seen good decision-making from the people running the show.
You've got to start on defense. They made sure to give defensive coordinator Dan Quinn the warmest of welcome backs. The Cowboys retained starters Leighton Vander Esch and Donovan Wilson and even added All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore in a trade.
They also made the right (but tough) call with one of the franchise's darlings: Ezekiel Elliott.
Although his history with the Cowboys can't be denied, it made little financial sense to keep him around for another year. Even more so after placing the franchise tag on Tony Pollard.
But while the Cowboys are heading in the right direction after a few days of free agency, there's much more to be done. And the reality is that their offseason won't be complete until they add legitimate weapons beyond CeeDee Lamb.
Here's how I'd line up the Cowboys starting offense as things stand right now (excluding the offensive line):
QB: Dak Prescott
RB: Tony Pollard
WR: CeeDee Lamb
WR: Michael Gallup
WR: Jalen Tolbert
TE: Jake Ferguson
Lamb has done his job. He's proved he can be a legit WR1 and continued to progress throughout the season. There are no worries there.
But Gallup, although he might be healthier in 2023, was a big disappointment last season. The Cowboys trust him so much that they even restructured his deal.
But it's a risky bet to go into next season with him slated as the No. 2 at the position.
Meanwhile, Jalen Tolbert might turn things around but realistically, he's a guy the Cowboys won't be able to figure out until training camp starts in July. The team made him a healthy scratch for the majority of the season.
Then there's tight end Jake Ferguson.
He looks legit. His yards after the catch have earned him comparisons to some of the best tight ends in football. The amazing Travis Kelce even gave him a shoutout during Super Bowl week.
But he played in 37% of the snaps last year and recorded 19 catches in the season. There's still a good deal we don't know about the 24-year-old. He's good but there has to be some urgency to add options for Dak Prescott.
Not to mention, Mike McCarthy is likely going to be very interested in running a lot of 12 personnel. The Cowboys need another weapon in the tight end room.
Fortunately, this NFL Draft is expected to feature many good tight ends. Daniel Jeremiah even said on NFL Network that he expected double-digit starting tight ends out of this year's class.
But wide receiver is a whole different story. And with many of the top names off the board, time could be running out for the Cowboys.
As good as this free agency has been for Dallas, they clearly need to figure out how to get more weapons on offense. As we learned in the Divisional Round of the playoffs, Lamb being the one and only target that gets open consistently is a recipe for disaster.
Here are some of the top wide receiver free agents that remain available:
- Darius Slayton
- D.J. Chark
- Mecole Hardman
- Marvin Jones
- Jarvis Landry
