Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb sat down for an interview on 105.3 The Fan and provided great insight into how Mike McCarthy's Texas Coast offense will be run. But not before warning NFL teams about his quarterback, Dak Prescott.
"He's very aggressive and the way he wants to win, and he's looking the deep ball now, and as you see today he's out there," Lamb told 105.3 The Fan. "So if you're not gonna back up – this is a warning to everybody – if you're not gonna back up, good luck."
But Lamb wasn't just issuing words of caution for opponents entering the 2023 NFL season. Instead, he did a great job shedding some light on how McCarthy's offense already differs from former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore's one.
For the two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, the changes are most noticeable in how it's called and communicated. Not just because of the language of the playbook but who's actually calling the plays.
"It just is a lot more simpler, all the offense is in Dak's hands now," confided Lamb. "It's not necessarily you know, being called from Mike or (Kellen) since last year, but now it's all on Dak. However he's feeling versus the coverage, if he likes the matchup he's going to call this play, if he likes whatever he likes versus zone, he's gonna call that play."
Knowing McCarthy's track record, it's easy to buy what Lamb is selling. After all, the Super Bowl-winning head coach's biggest strength might be his knowledge of the quarterback position. Earlier in the offseason, he discussed how one of the things he likes to do is really empower quarterbacks and have them make the offense their own.
This is particularly exciting to hear because one of Prescott's best traits has to be the way he sees and thinks about the game. His mental processing is the single biggest reason why he's established himself as a franchise quarterback in the NFL. Putting more power and giving him more freedom will allow him to show that off on gameday. According to CeeDee, he already is.
"This is the most in control of the offense that I've seen Dak," added the Cowboys wide receiver. "Going to the line of scrimmage, us as receivers, we know the other two or three options that he has to change to. I feel like that opens up the game, that opens up Dak's mind and he doesn't feel so closed off."
Prescott's eighth year in the NFL will be his first with a true change in offensive scheme and offensive play-caller. Even though Kellen Moore did a lot of good, he came from the same staff of the Jason Garrett years. Based on what we've heard so far, the new scenario is already paying off.
Details finally emerge on Cowboys rookie’s ‘challenging’ injury
It’s all about being smart.
