Rookie draft pick Tyler Smith is the main focal point of the Dallas Cowboys offensive line re-build. He was a surprise pick at 24 overall, yielding mixed results from fans and analysts.

The rookie is slated to be the starting left guard by the start of the season, though he has been reportedly practicing with the second string. Connor McGovern having taken the starting snaps at left guard, making the rookie earn the job.

However, it's another rookie offensive lineman who is raising early eyebrows.

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys front office have made it clear they don't intend to use a veteran as swing tackle. Instead, the backup offensive tackle position will be played out between rookie Matt Waletzko, second-year lineman Josh Ball and the flexibility of Smith.

Ball was drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was seen as a high-upside player but came with a series of red flags. Despite his upside, he has yet to play a down in the NFL. Missing his rookie season due to a nagging ankle injury.

Meaning they are on equal playing ground for the Dallas Cowboys swing tackle.

With Tyron Smith not practicing, Ball has been given first-team reps and Waletzko with the second to start. Yeilding mixed results.

On Thursday, the rookie Waletzko took with the first team but was pulled after enacting a pre-snap penalty.

Granted that it's still early in OTA's. These practices are all in helmet and jerseys, with a primary focus on technique and getting back into football shape. We won't really know who's got the edge until the pads come on this summer.

One of these young players will need to stand out in preseason, making the decision for a young swing player easier to swallow. Otherwise it could spell trouble for the Cowboys offensive line, and the team in general. Unless, that is, Tyron Smith can stay healthy for every game.
