This isn't the start the Dallas Cowboys wanted for their 2023 training camp.
It's no secret now that All-Pro guard Zack Martin isn't happy with his current contract and wants to be compensated according to what the market says his value is, which is understandable.
When the Cowboys took flight for Oxnard, California, Martin was not on the plane, but it didn't necessarily mean that he wouldn't be there once training camp festivities kicked off. Well, as of Tuesday, that is the case as Martin isn't in attendance according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who is never at a loss for words, made it clear that certain things just weren't going to be talked about.
"Just not going to discuss any of our players' agreements," Jones said during a press conference on Tuesday. "We certainly have great communication with, frankly everybody. And so not necessarily any surprise at all, but we won't be discussing any of the football business aspect of this thing with any public comments."
Martin has been the most reliable link on the Cowboys' offensive line since he entered the NFL in 2014. He has eight All-Pro selections and eight Pro Bowl nods which are more than the number of times he's been called for holding in his career, truly a mind-blowing stat.
The former first-round pick is coming off a season where he didn't allow any sacks, was only flagged for one penalty, only gave up two quarterback hits, and 16 pressures in 1,143 snaps. Simply put, Martin is aging like a fine wine.
Despite this, Martin is making around $7 million less annually than the other top guards in the NFL. Considering his undeniable dominance, and being recognized as the best interior offensive lineman by respected league personnel, Martin's frustration with his pay is valid.
However, Jones remains cool as a cucumber.
"There's nothing to concern me regarding contractual situations," said Jones.
Regarding this situation, there's little doubt that it'll get resolved, Martin is too important to what the Cowboys do. But it isn't the ideal storyline to start training camp either.
Cowboys: Zack Martin ‘considering not reporting’ to training camp
The Dallas Cowboys are not escaping the offseason without major drama as one of their best best players could miss training camp entering the 2023 NFL season.
