The Dallas Cowboys struggled at wide receiver in 2022 outside of All-Pro CeeDee Lamb. They were one of the worst groups at getting separation, largely due to a lack of speed at the position.
Dallas didn't sit on their hands and added more juice for quarterback Dak Prescott. The Cowboys traded for veteran Brandin Cooks back in March and only gave up a 2023 fifth-round pick and a sixth-round pick next year.
It's not a secret that Cooks is still fast going into his 10th season, a point he emphasized last month. However, seeing it from afar is one thing but in person is a different experience.
Prescott has gotten the chance to see it quite a bit in OTAs and mandatory minicamp, and Cooks hasn't disappointed.
“It’s beautiful," Prescott said. "Yeah, real speed. …For him to be able to do it every play, every route, the start of every route — the cornerbacks, defense, they don’t know what they’re getting. It all looks the same. I’m thankful he’s here.”
The Cowboys will have an opportunity to do a lot of damage through the air in 2023 with Cooks on the roster.
Cooks is mainly an outside receiver despite his size and his ability to take the top off of the defense will draw attention to him and let Lamb produce from the slot and give Gallup more one-on-one chances.
The former first-round pick is also experienced in the slot. The 4.3 speed of Cooks in the middle of the field will make it difficult to double-team CeeDee Lamb or Gallup to eat on the outside, which means nightmares for opposing defenses.
Just like the speed of Cooks couldn't be understood by Prescott until he saw it live, Cooks had to get to Dallas to get the full perspective of what his new quarterback was all about.
"His competitive nature. The way that he goes about his work," said Cooks. "You hear about it from teammates or ex-teammates, the way that he carries himself. I'm truly excited to be able to play with a guy like that who's hungry to get better."
Cooks has a great shot at being the best offseason move by any team in the NFL. Regardless, the Cowboys got a lot better on offense by bringing him on board.
