Dallas grabbed Tulsa offensive lineman Tyler Smith in the first-round to fill the need at offensive guard. Then, the Cowboys took Ole Miss edge Sam Williams to bolster the pass rush, filling the void left by Randy Gregory in free agency.
Finally, Dallas went with South Alabama wide receiver Jalen Tolbert to end the second night of NFL Draft weekend. None other than Emmitt Smith announced the pick in Las Vegas.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Jalen Tolbert entered the draft as one of the best receiver prospects in the class. At South Alabama, Tolbert emerged as a difference-making playmaker. Tolbert earned conference Player of the Year honors and eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark twice.
At 6-1 and 195 pounds, Tolbert features ideal size for a wideout at the NFL level. He is a fluid player that demonstrated impressive route running in college. NFL Draft guru ranked Jalen Tolbert as the No. 59 overall prospect in the class and the No. 9 wide receiver.
Tolbert passed on opportunities to play at Michigan State and Vanderbilt before becoming a star at South Alabama. The newest Cowboys receiver totaled a combined 2,559 yards and 14 touchdowns during his final two collegiate seasons.
HOW HE FITS WITH THE COWBOYS
The Dallas Cowboys had a need to fill at wide receiver after trading away Amari Cooper and watching Cedrick Wilson sign elsewhere in free agency. CeeDee Lamb is expected to emerge as the go-to guy in the offense, but the Cowboys needed to add pieces to the mix.
Michael Gallup re-signed, but he is expected to miss the start of the 2022 season while recovering from an ACL tear. Dallas added James Washington through free agency, though the former Pittsburgh Steelers pass catcher has struggled to find his footing in the NFL.
Tolbert provides the Cowboys with a receiver that can fill multiple roles in an offense. He primarily played the X-receiver at South Alabama, but Tolbert did play every receiver position during his college career.
Dallas needed to add a receiver through the draft, and the team did just that in the third-round. Jalen Tolbert is a great value selection and has an opportunity to make an early impact for the Cowboys.
The Dallas Cowboys are set to make its fourth selection of the draft at No. 129 overall in the fourth-round on Saturday.
