Week 13 of the 2020 season pits the 3-8 Dallas Cowboys against the 6-5 Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday Night Football. Yes, you read that correctly. The Cowboys will be playing on Tuesday night for the first time in the franchise's rich history.
Both squads are struggling entering the matchup. The Dallas Cowboys have looked anything but a true playoff contender since Dak Prescott went down in the middle of October, while the Ravens have not had the same kind of success that they had in 2019.
Dallas is coming off of an embarrassing loss on Thanksgiving Day to the hands of the Washington Football Team, while Baltimore dropped a hard-fought game against the rival Pittsburgh Steelers without star quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Despite the Cowboys' lackluster record, the team is still alive for the NFC East crown — which speaks to how poorly the division has been this season. As for the Ravens, Baltimore is looking to get things back on track to improve their chances of clinching a playoff spot in the AFC.
This game has been postponed a number of different times as the league did its best to allow time for the Ravens and the Steelers to play, but the game will finally be played on Tuesday evening. Here are three things to keep an eye on during the showdown.
Dez Bryant versus the Dallas Cowboys.
You cannot talk about this matchup without mentioning that former Dallas Cowboys star wideout Dez Bryant will be on the field — for the other team. The Ravens, in need of another weapon on the offensive side of the ball, recently added Bryant to its roster. Bryant has played three games for the Ravens.
In those three games, number 88 has recorded four catches on seven targets for 28 yards, good enough for a 7.0 yards per catch average. The veteran out of Oklahoma State is not lighting it up with Baltimore thus far, but it is hard to not root for the former Cowboys star.
Regardless of how Bryant performs on Sunday against his former team, many Cowboys fans will be tuning in to see number 88 play some ball.
Ravens run offense versus Cowboys run defense.
The Ravens are one of the best teams in football at running the football. Even without the threat of Lamar Jackson, Baltimore averaged just under five yards per carry and burst off a few big runs against the Steelers defense.
Baltimore is third in the league in rushing yards per game, second in the league in yards per rush, and have a number of different players capable of picking up yardage on the ground. We know about Jackson, but the Ravens also do a great job of utilizing Mark Ingram, Gus Edwards, and Justice Hill in their ground attack.
The Cowboys defense has improved, for the most part, over the course of the season but are still susceptible to giving up big rushing performances. Look no further than Antonio Gibson, who totaled 115 yards and three scores on nearly six yards per carry in the Cowboys' last game.
That said, the Cowboys did do a solid job of overcoming a strong performance from Dalvin Cook to pull out a road victory over the Minnesota Vikings the week before. On paper, Minnesota has more weapons at pass catcher than Baltimore (Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson versus Mark Andrews and Hollywood Brown), but Jackson is much bigger threat than Kirk Cousins.
Dallas will have a chance in this game if they are able to make the Ravens work for it on the ground. That is much easier said than done, however.
Can Ezekiel Elliott put together a solid game?
Even people who were against paying Zeke big money have to be surprised by how much Elliott has regressed in 2020. The Cowboys running back has only broken 100 yards rushing once and has fumbled six times this season. Simply put: Ezekiel Elliott has taken a huge step backwards.
The Cowboys do not need to be stubborn and rely on Elliott and the ground game, but the team cannot afford to be one-dimensional and expect to beat playoff-caliber squads with Andy Dalton forced to carry the load.
Tuesday night is the latest opportunity for Elliott to rebound and remind us what he is capable of doing. Against the Vikings, Zeke rushed for 116 yards and even recorded a touchdown reception in the 31-28 win. However, the Ravens are much better at playing the run than the Vikings and will surely make life harder for Elliott — especially with an even more banged up Cowboys offensive line.
Zeke has to be hungry to make a statement after rushing for just 32 yards versus the Washington Football Team. It will be interesting to see whether or not he or Tony Pollard are able to have much success against the Ravens and take some pressure off of Andy Dalton.
