We don't exactly know how the moving pieces will end up looking like when it's all said and done. But we do know big changes at the quarterback position are going to take place in the NFL. And the Dallas Cowboys could very well end up in position to make the most out of it.
The NFL is a passing league and teams that enjoy long-term success usually have a pretty good quarterback under center. Now, in order to win championships, you need more than a quarterback. In the ultimate team sport, it's important to get that clear.
Having said that, two things can be true at the same time. 1) You need more than a quarterback. 2) There's no more valuable position that contributes the most to winning than the quarterback.
With that in mind, the Dallas Cowboys might strongly benefit from an NFL offseason that could feature plenty of big quarterback changes. Particularly, the fact that the NFC might pale in comparison to the AFC at such a position.
Think about it, Tom Brady is considering hanging it up after two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Aaron Rodgers' future is unknown, but if he ends up leaving the Green Bay Packers, his most likely destinations are all in the AFC. Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks have not committed to staying together for 2022. Drew Brees retired a year ago.
Meamwhile, the Divisional Round's AFC Sunday Night epic thriller between Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen is being billed as the next "Brady-Manning" kind of rivalry. Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson are all in the AFC. As a group, their future definitely seems brighter than the NFC's group.
While many discussions have taken place about Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys in the days following their playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the truth is they've got one of the best quarterbacks in the conference. Even more so if Rodgers, Wilson, or Brady are gone in the near future.
This is what the NFC picture looks like heading into the offseason. Right now, Dak Prescott is arguably a Top 4-5 QB in the conference with the potential of being ranked higher if some of the potential QB changes end up happening.
Should this change the urgency the Dallas Cowboys feel as an organization to go all in in the next few seasons? We'll find out soon.
