There has been a lot of excitement since the Dallas Cowboys signed Dak Prescott to a massive contract earlier this week. The drama that surrounded the team and the quarterback for the past three years is now behind us. Now, we can look forward to a future with a franchise quarterback set in stone.
Prescott is now the second-highest paid player in league history. Only some guy named Patrick Mahomes has signed a more expensive contract. That is quite the pay-day for Prescott, who played for relative pennies on a fourth-round rookie deal.
As good of as his rookie season was, Prescott has developed into a bonafide franchise signal-caller. His fundamentals, accuracy, and ball placement have all improved over the course of his career.
There is no arguing that Dak Prescott is one of the 10 best quarterbacks in the NFL. Where he ranks in that top-10 is more up for debate, but Prescott is an ascending player and compares favorably to the elite passers in the league.
PRESCOTT IS ONLY QB TO RANK TOP-5 IN THESE CATEGORIES
Patrick Mahomes. Russell Wilson. Deshaun Watson. Aaron Rodgers. Tom Brady. Pick your quarterback.
None of those signal-callers are top-5 in the five categories that Warren Sharp tweeted out on Monday after news broke of Prescott's deal. The Mississippi State product ranks top-5 in passing expected points added, yards per attempt, success percentage, explosive pass rate, and average target depth since 2019.
That is not the biggest sample size in the world, obviously. Prescott missed the majority of the 2020 season with a gruesome ankle injury. However, Prescott's development since the back-half of the 2018 season to now has been really fun to watch.
Prescott's footwork has improved to a different level, and his ball placement has been off the charts compared to where he was early in his career. The former fourth-round pick was thrown into the fire as a rookie and thrived. He's only getting better after years of development and coaching.
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Jon Kitna played a major role in fixing Prescott's mechanics. Prescott still gives a lot of credit to Kitna, who is now coaching high school football in the Dallas area, for his improvement as a quarterback.
Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has also had an impact on the Cowboys quarterback. Moore is considered one of the smartest minds around the league, even earning an interview in the Eagles' head coaching search.
Moore was initially ahead of Prescott on the depth chart after Prescott was first drafted. Now, the Boise State legend is doing his best to make Prescott better and better. It should be a lot of fun watching Prescott, Moore, and head coach Mike McCarthy work together for a full season in 2021.
The Dallas Cowboys have one of the best quarterbacks in all of football with Dak Prescott. These are just a few statistics that back that claim up. Prescott is only getting better, too.
