There is a plethora of talent on the Dallas Cowboys offense. The emergence of tight end Dalton Schultz has been nothing short of impressive. Blake Jarwin was widely considered as the team's top TE entering the season. That has not been the case so far. Schultz's impact and production with Dak Prescott are undeniable.
That being said, how does he rank when it comes to his position across the league?
The Stats
- 5th in receptions among TEs
- 4th in receiving yards among TEs
- 3rd (tied) in receiving touchdowns among TEs
- 4th in fantasy points among TEs
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell you that these numbers are phenomenal for a player that many thought would just be depth. He's risen much above that. His quarterback trusts him, too.
Going forward, should these type of numbers be expected from Schultz? I think so. The return of Michael Gallup may take away some of his production in certain games, but his return will affect Cedrick Wilson more than the tight ends in the long run.
The Role
The Cowboys offense has to keep Schultz involved regardless. He is a safety blanket for Dak Prescott, and Kellen Moore has shown that he will scheme touches for the TE.
Schultz is on pace for 957 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. For comparison, those projections are better than those of guys like T.J. Hockenson, Kyle Pitts, and Mike Gesicki.
It is exciting to consider how involved Schultz has been in the offense, but the receivers and running backs have been so involved at the same time as well. It has not been a "one or the other" situation.
The Cowboys top TE has been very under-the-radar for most of the season. That will change if he continues to play up to this level.
