NFL free agency is off to a hot start. The Dallas Cowboys, however, are being patient with making any decisions thus far through the first wave.
In fact, most of the notable Cowboys news involves players leaving town. Dallas parted ways with veteran and beloved long-snapper L.P Ladouceur on Monday. Joe Thomas inked with the Texans later in the day. Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie signed a three-year deal with the Bengals on Tuesday.
We knew that the Cowboys were not going to be big spenders this offseason. It just hasn't been their strategy over the years. Still, it doesn't make watching other teams add key talent any more enjoyable.
Cowboys QB Andy Dalton is off to the Bears.
Reports suggested that there was a possibility for another year of Andy Dalton with the Dallas Cowboys in 2021. The TCU Horned Frogs product has made it known that he enjoys living in Texas, and the Cowboys could certainly use his experience behind Dak Prescott as Prescott returns from injury.
Dalton, instead, now has a chance to compete for a starting gig next season for a different team. The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback inked a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday afternoon.
Chicago appears to be preparing for a quarterback battle between Dalton and Nick Foles. 2017 second overall pick Mitchell Trubisky appears to be heading out of town, and it was reported that the Bears will not be making a trade for Russell Wilson after some speculation.
Dalton had his struggles behind a banged-up offensive line in 2020. It will be interesting to see if he can find some success in the Windy City.
COWBOYS ADD TO OFFENSIVE LINE
Dallas did make some moves on Tuesday. The Cowboys re-signed cornerback and special teams contributor C.J. Goodwin. Dallas also added veteran offensive lineman Ty Nsekhe to help shore up the trenches.
Nsekhe, an Arlington native, has played for a handful of teams during his seven-year career, most notably with the Buffalo Bills. He provides the Cowboys with a swing tackle option as both Tyron Smith and La'el Collins return from injury.
The two signings that the Cowboys made on Tuesday — Nsekhe and Goodwin — won't make many headlines. That said, it is more of the same with Dallas when it comes to free agency.
Dallas isn't going to make a splash in free agency. This front office prefers to bargain bin shop in free agency while putting more of an emphasis on the draft.
Overall, Goodwin is a key special teams contributor that provides a little bit of depth in the secondary. Nsekhe brings valuable experience on the offensive line and is insurance in case Smith or Collins have to miss time.
