The Dallas Cowboys (3-1) will take on the LA Rams on Sunday. Reigning Super Bowl champions, coming off a loss against their rival San Francisco 49ers. Looking ahead to Sunday, the news keeps coming in. Good and bad.
Good news is the LA Rams are the NFL's worst-ranked blitzing defense. An area the Cowboys excel.
Bad news is they will be without one of their top offensive players. It's being reported that OL Jason Peters is listed as "doubtful" for the game.
Even worse, beyond Sunday, it puts the next few games in serious doubt.
While the expectations were that Peters was actually the best option at left guard, it looks like fate is making the choice themselves.
In McGovern's defense, he is looking much better at left guard in his 53 snaps this season, than at all in 2021.
Factoring in that Aaron Donald will likely be shadowing him for the majority of the game, this is a slight relief.
Even with McGovern regaining his full-time LG spot, losing Peters for an undetermined amount of time is unfortunate. In rotation, Peters has only allowed one pressure and zero sacks allowed on 19 pass block snaps.
Elevating much of the concern the Dallas Cowboys faced coming into the season. Peters didn't play the first two games of the season, allowing himself to catch up in conditioning.
Now, only two games (37 total snaps) late, it's uncertain when Peters will return.
With Peters and Tyron Smith out for undetermined amounts of time, much of the veteran leadership is falling from the starting five. Aside from Zack Martin.
Going into the game, McGovern will start at left guard. Matt Farniok will continue to serve as the interior rotational backup. Playing guard and center.
This week was already a test for Dallas. Now, without their security blanket on the offensive line, it will be all on the starting five to hold up.
