Sean Lee will have the chance to start on the Dallas Cowboys' defense again, given Leighton Vander Esch's recent injury. Despite returning in 2020 hoping for a bigger role, Lee has played a disappointing 10% of the defense's snaps. In what could turn out to be the Cowboys' biggest game of the year, the General is expected to start alongside Jaylon Smith against a division rival.
At 34-years-old, Lee's future in the NFL is uncertain. His injury history is particularly concerning, yet he still finds enough love for football to keep coming back for more. He is, in his own words, addicted to it. Forget about requiring surgery to reattach his abs to his pelvic bone (I mean, I'm not a doctor but yikes)… Lee simply loves playing.
When talking to the media this week, Sean Lee spoke on his future:
“But the problem is, any time I go on the field and I get to play, and you make a couple of plays, you’re like, ‘I like this too much.’ And that is my problem. I love this game too much. I love this organization a lot. And I love playing."
Sean Lee could very well take up coaching after his playing career is over. Mike McCarthy even said he told his linebacker they should talk if he's interested in coaching. That would be no surprise for a player that's proven to be as smart as Sean Lee over a long career. Cowboys fans have not forgotten that scene in Amazon Prime's documentary series "All or Nothing" in which Lee is shown watching tape alone.
But regardless of what the future holds for him, all that's on Lee's mind right now is facing the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. It won't be an easy game as the Cowboys prepare to face rookie Quarterback Jalen Hurts in his third career start. Hurts has been successful with his legs as well as with his arm. He rushed for over 100 yards against the Saints and for 63 against the Cardinals, who also boast a Top 10 defense.
But although the Eagles' read option is the main concern here, Hurts has thrown the ball well. He's far from perfect, but 21 of his completed passes last week moved the chains in Arizona. Not to mention he threw for 338 yards and three passing touchdowns.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys have struggled on defense all year. And they've struggled more against mobile quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Kyler Murray, who combined for 168 yards against this defense.
At linebacker, the issues have been clear. Both Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch are playing poorly and aren't being helped by the defensive tackles' lack of control in the trenches.
With Sean Lee in the lineup on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys hope to see a disciplined performance from a linebacker who could be playing his last game ever at AT&T Stadium. Here's hoping Lee gets in a strong game in what could be his AT&T Stadium farewell game.
