The Dallas Cowboys have yet to make a splash in the opening days of NFL free agency. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, though. Dallas does not have the front office that likes to spend big on outside players.
Signing Dak Prescott was the biggest and most impactful move that the Dallas Cowboys could make this offseason. Securing the quarterback position is extremely important, and the Cowboys got that done. Still, the Cowboys should not relax and fail to make other moves to improve the roster.
Dallas has made some minor moves through the first two days of free agency: re-signing cornerback C.J. Goodwin and inking offensive tackle Ty Nsekhe, among them. The Cowboys watched Chidobe Awuzie and Andy Dalton leave town, signing with the Bengals and Bears, respectively.
COWBOYS LINKED TO TWO VETERAN DEFENDERS
The Cowboys still have some time to make deals. It is a long free agency period, after all. Players such as cornerback Adoree Jackson and safety Keanu Neal are available to be had. Jackson might be a little pricey, but Neal has a connection to Dan Quinn.
Two veteran defenders are reportedly linked to the Dallas Cowboys. Mike Fisher of CowboysSI is reporting that the Cowboys have made some contact with cornerback Patrick Peterson and linebacker K.J. Wright.
Peterson is not the same player that he was in his prime when he was among the best corners in football. That said, he is a veteran in the league that still has some left in the tank. Peterson also has the ability to play either at corner or at safety, providing interested teams with some flexibility.
Wright, like Peterson, has been in the league for quite some time. The accomplished linebacker played under Quinn in Seattle, providing a connection between Wright and the Cowboys. Dallas has a need at linebacker, and signing Wright would help solve some of those concerns.
There is no indication that the Cowboys will sign either Peterson or Wright at this point. Dallas isn't the only team interested in either player, and we have seen that the Cowboys do not like to get into bidding wars in free agency.
Adding either of these players would help the Cowboys defense in a meaningful way. The Cowboys cannot afford to wait until the draft to address the defensive side of the ball. We will see if the Cowboys make a move to sign Patrick Peterson or K.J. Wright in the coming days.
