The Dallas Cowboys made a major roster mistake this offseason.

And it's too late to make it right.

Linebacker Micah Parsons was a revelation for Dallas last season, totaling 13 sacks on his way to the defensive rookie of the year award.

But despite Parsons' production, the Cowboys were middle of the road in the NFL in total sacks (No. 14 in the league).

Additionally, relying on Parsons as a pass-rusher took away from his other abilities to impact the game as a linebacker. It basically made him a one-dimensional player — something the Cowboys are looking to change in 2022.

"It’s about targeting because — trust me — they’re going to know where [Parsons] is at," said Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy last month. "He may be playing the linebacker position, but I would think most offensive protection schemes will declare him as a big, as a rusher, and we’re aware of all of that. We’re just trying to create opportunities that do travel and keep the 4-on-3 and the 3-on-2 at all times. We’re creating two really good 1-on-1s on the backside of that.”

One way to do that is to take some of the pass-rushing responsibility away from Parsons.

Unfortunately, the Cowboys don't have a ton of other great options. They're hoping second-round draft pick Sam Williams can be that guy, but that's a big ask for a rookie.

Dallas could've signed free agent pass rusher Von Miller to be that guy this offseason.

Miller, a Dallas area native, wanted to sign with the Cowboys before he ended up signing with the Buffalo Bills.

The former Super Bowl MVP was even willing to give Dallas a discount. But the Cowboys gave Miller an insanely low offer.

Signing with Dallas would've allowed Miller to be close to home more often and spend more time with his young son. He was ready to make the move.

The Cowboys were seemingly in a good spot to sign Miller, too. After they didn't re-sign Randy Gregory, Dallas had some extra cash to spare. But instead of making a serious offer, they gave Miller the same offer they gave Gregory.

From The Athletic:

Spending as much time as possible with Valor (Miller's son) has become Miller’s priority, and there was a chance they could have been together much more — becoming a Cowboy this offseason would have given Miller a chance to be near everything he holds most dear.

Outside linebacker Randy Gregory initially agreed to terms to return to the Cowboys in March, but then backed out, instead signing with the Broncos. Miller says Dallas then offered him the same contract they had negotiated with Gregory — a reported five-year, $70 million deal with two years guaranteed.

“I told them I was ready to come to the Cowboys,” Miller says. “I would have taken less to go to Dallas because it’s Dallas. But I wouldn’t take that much less.”

All Dallas has to do was meet Miller in the middle. But they blew it.

Miller of course isn't the same player he was when he helped lead the Denver Broncos to a win against the Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl in early 2016. But he's still just 33 years old and he put up solid numbers last season, totaling 9.5 sacks. He also had four sacks in the playoffs last season for the Los Angeles Rams, including two sacks in the Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Cowboys had a great opportunity in front of them this offseason and they just let it pass by. There's truly no excuse for it. It was the perfect scenario for a team that could certainly use a pass rusher like Miller.
