Going into week one, the biggest concerns surrounding the Dallas Cowboys were the receiving core and offensive line. There were holes in both groups following their loss to Tampa Bay.
The receiving core totaled only 11 catches for 125 yards on 28 targets. Granted many of those throws were ill-advised attempts. Still there were a shocking number of drops and often times receivers were unable to create separation.
Contrary, the offensive line overall faired well against the Buccaneer's elite front seven. Rookie Tyler Smith played well in his first career start, as well as a solid performance from the interior offensive line, even after losing Connor McGovern to a high ankle sprain.
However, the line is still young and inexperienced and there needs to be more from the receiving core. Now that QB Dak Prescott will be out for a few games, Cooper Rush will man the helm.
The good news is he'll soon be getting some much needed help.
WR Michael Gallup and OL Jason Peters are both participating at a heavier capacity in practices.
Gallup was seen taking snaps in team drills on Wednesday. Leaving speculation he could make his Dallas Cowboys 2022 debut sometime soon.
Same goes for future Hall of Fame OL Jason Peters. His conditioning is getting better in practices, and while the offensive line played better than expected, it's a wonder just where he will play.
The realistic options being left tackle, left guard or right guard. All positions he has experience playing.
Despite OT Terence Steele being the weakest link of week one, but Peters has never played right tackle and it's too late in his career to have him learn a new position. Right guard is obviously maned by Zack Martin.
He will most likely be a left side player. Does this mean he will play his natural left tackle? Or the Dallas Cowboys don't want to mess with Smith's development after a solid debut, and kick Peters inside?
Regardless, the return of Gallup and arrival of Peters are just in time. It's undetermined yet if either will play in week two, but the Dallas Cowboys need more. Much more than what they got in week one.
At the very least, these two veteran players can provide quality depth at weakest of the team's links.
