The Dallas Cowboys made one of the most important signings of its offseason on Monday, as reports surfaced that safety Jayron Kearse has inked a new deal.
Kearse, who entered free agency after signing a one-year deal with the Cowboys last season, was a top priority for Dallas. The veteran defender emerged as one of the key players in Dan Quinn's defense last season.
ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler reported that the deal is two years worth $10 million. Additionally, Kearse can make another $1 million in incentives.
Securing Kearse is huge news for the Dallas Cowboys. Already thin at safety, the Cowboys could ill-afford to lose a key contributor on the defense — especially after already losing out on Randy Gregory.
Kearse signed a one-year prove-it deal with the Cowboys last offseason after spending the season prior with the Detroit Lions. The veteran defensive back played the first four seasons of his career with the Minnesota Vikings.
In his first season in Dallas, Kearse had the best season of his career. Dan Quinn and the Cowboys' scheme brought the best out of the Clemson product, as he filled a major role on the NFC East champions:
- 101 tackles
- 2 interceptions
- 10 pass breakups
The versatility that Kearse provides the Cowboys with was a big factor in the defense turning the corner. He was tasked with playing in the box while also dropping back and covering tight ends.
Behind phenom Micah Parsons, a strong argument can be made that Jayron Kearse was the second most important player on the Dallas Cowboys defense.
Keeping Kearse in Dallas secures the safety position and ensures that the Cowboys won't have to fill another need this offseason. This is an A+ move by the front office.
