The Dallas Cowboys giveth and they taketh away.
Friday's news cycle is the perfect example of this. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported earlier Friday that it's likely the Cowboys will part ways with Pro Bowl receiver Amari Cooper. Later on that day, he stated the Cowboys are "close" to working out a deal with impending free agent Michael Gallup, as well.
According to Schefter, there's "hope" both sides can reach an agreement, which would obviously go a long way in potentially replacing Cooper.
Schefter's report creates an interesting situation in Dallas. Gallup tore his ACL in Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals. While that moment in time creates a reasonable timeline for recovery, said timeline gets thrown out of whack whenever people realize Gallup waited until close to mid-February to have surgery on said ACL.
How this all makes sense depends on how much the Cowboys are willing to pay Gallup. Per Spotrac.com, he's scheduled to make $11.8 million, on average.
But apparently, those closest to the team have heard a number that is rather over-the-top, to put it lightly. Per Connor Livesay of Blogging The Boys, the potential figures are not what Cowboys media -or fans- consider ideal.
Regardless of what happens, the Cowboys' decision-making will be tested at the ultimate level. Potentially ditching a receiver that has proven to be successful over the majority of his career for another receiver not only coming off a serious injury, but an inconsistent career, is a bold choice to make. Regardless of either role on offense.
But, the good news is at least one of Dak Prescott's targets will be back in the fold in 2022. When you have a franchise quarterback, you want them to be surrounded with as many effective weapons as possible.
At least the Cowboys are trying to do that with Gallup.
