The Dallas Cowboys fully expect linebacker Leighton Vander Esch to be ready for the playoffs after sustaining an injury during the loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15.
But the linebacker isn't planning on playing in the regular season finale, via Dallas Morning News' Michael Gehlken. The Cowboys defender described the decision as a way to get him extra time to rest.
This is a good call by the Cowboys even though the NFC East is still on the line. The team can't be too sure about the New York Giants lending out a hand versus the Philadelphia Eagles since Brian Daboll's team has nothing to play for as they're locked into the No. 6 seed.
While Mike McCarthy's Cowboys might be forced to play starters just in case things go their way and they're positioned for the division title, risking Vander Esch ahead of the playoffs seems unnecessary.
Vander Esch has been missed by the Cowboys defense as the middle linebacker has exceeded expectations in 2022. In 14 games played, the veteran has 90 tackles (54 solo), four tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and one pass deflection.
The Cowboys are also expecting defensive tackle Jonathan Hankins and center Tyler Biadasz back for the playoffs.
