Deebo Samuel "likes" the idea of ending up with Cowboys
It's not really an NFL offseason until a big-name player isn't linked to the Dallas Cowboys. This year, for example, Cowboys Nation was praying to the football gods to send LB Bobby Wagner to Dallas. Well, it turns out Wagner was just the first of two NFC West stars to be linked to Dallas in 2022. You could've seen the Wagner stories coming even before the 2021 regular season started.
But Deebo Samuel? The guy who averaged over 18 yards per reception while also being a legitimate threat in the running game? How is he even available after thriving in Kyle Shanahan's offense?
Well, I guess how we got here is a topic that 49ers fans can worry about. But Samuel is requesting a trade from the San Francisco 49ers, per Jeff Darlington from ESPN.
Shortly after the news broke out, the First-Team All-Pro wide receiver liked a tweet with an edit of himself wearing the navy and silver alongside CeeDee Lamb.
Deebo and the Cowboys are to fun to think about, but don't count on it happening
Believe me, I "like" to imagine Deebo tearing it up alongside Michael Gallup, CeeDee Lamb, and Dak Prescott as much as you do. Yet, we've been down this road before.
The Dallas Cowboys are hesitant to pay top dollar for players not drafted by the organization. When they traded a first-round pick for Amari Cooper in 2018, they later allowed him to taste free agency before getting him secured for the long-term. And even that happened with little guaranteed money on Cooper's deal. You know the ending of that story by now.
You'd have a hard time convincing me the Cowboys would open up the wallet for Deebo when they let a talent like Cooper walk on what seemed like a major bargain of a contract.
Samuel just asked for a trade and knowing that the 49ers don't have to deal him away since he's still under contract, the 26-year-old receiver is looking for some leverage. Many of these free agents and trade block players have thrown the Cowboys into the conversation because of the noise they make nationwide.
Chances are, the visions of Samuel moving the chains with the Star on his helmet Cowboys fans had when hearing the news will remain just that: visions.
