The Dallas Cowboys have reported to training camp in Oxnard, California. But some of the biggest buzz is surrounding current contract situations.
One in particular, that of All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs, has been at the forefront. Not just because he's in a contract year, but also because of what was leaked out recently.
Dez Bryant is the Cowboys all-time leader in touchdown receptions, and he's always been vocal about the way he feels about things. That was no different when he spoke on his conversations with Diggs lately about his long-term financial security.
"I'll say this, me and Diggs we've been talking," Bryant said. "I'll just tell you some of the things I've been saying to Diggs. 'Diggs you've done something that a lot of cornerbacks have not done in their first three years in the NFL.' Name one. Name one cornerback besides the cornerback 81 what's his name Dick Train? That was him right? Dick Train right? In '81 who had the interception record? Nobody has done that.
"And I've I told Diggs, and I'm not going to get too deep into our conversation, but I told him I said hey, you don't compromise that. You don't compromise that. I'll say this, he is not trying to knock them across the head, I will say that, and I will say they're not trying to be fair to him."
The ceiling for cornerbacks in terms of annual salary is Jaire Alexander of the Green Bay Packers at $21 million. Denzel Ward of the Cleveland Browns is just under that at $20.1 million and Miami’s Jalen Ramsey is at $20 million.
Dallas made some major waves on Tuesday when it came to Diggs. They agreed to terms with Diggs on a five-year extension for $97 million with a total value of $104 million with incentives.
The Cowboys were smart to get this done early. But the $19.4 million annually that Diggs is getting is the key here.
Bryant said that Diggs wasn't trying to break the bank with his new deal. The annual salary for Diggs is tied with Marshon Lattimore of the New Orleans Saints for the fifth-highest at the cornerback position.
Not only was Bryant truthful about the intentions of Diggs, but the Cowboys were able to lock up one of their best players at a discount, something they've done multiple times this offseason with other contracts.
This whole situation ended up working out for both sides.
