The Dallas Cowboys' goal in 2022 is obvious — it's Super Bowl or bust.

If the Cowboys don't at least reach the Super Bowl this season, it'll likely be the end of the road for head coach Mike McCarthy (especially with former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, a favorite of Dallas owner Jerry Jones, possibly available after the season).

So are the Cowboys in a better position in 2022 to reach a Super Bowl than they were in 2021?

Not according to The Athletic. The renowned national sports publication feels like Dallas is a worse team now than they were before the start of the offseason.

From The Athletic:

“They’re a team that probably got worse this offseason,” Fitzgerald said. “(Michael) Gallup’s contract is OK, but you’ve gotta bank on him being healthy, which he hasn’t necessarily been.”

Gallup will be coming off of a torn ACL he suffered in Week 17. The Cowboys also lost wide receiver Cedrick Wilson in free agency. They replaced him with James Washington from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Cowboys initially agreed to terms on a new deal with Gregory, but after a dispute, he signed with the Broncos.

“I think that was an over-valued contract, but it didn’t look good for them because they were more than willing to offer him that contract. They got into a fight over contract language,” Fitzgerald said. “I think people are going to look at this as a bad offseason for them. They need a home run again in the draft.”

It's hard to argue against what The Atheltic is saying. Dallas didn't do anything major this offseason to make the roster better. All they really did was try to make their salary cap situation better by releasing a couple of key players in Amari Cooper and La'el Collins.

There's no way that losing Cooper and Collins makes Dallas a better team.

The good news for Cowboys fans, though, is that this team is still good enough to reach a Super Bowl. Dallas will once again be the favorites to win the NFC East. And if the season goes as expected, the Cowboys will cruise to their second straight division title.

But when it comes playoff time, Dallas could certainly end up missing a couple of the players they decided to move on from this offseason.
