Dak Prescott had an up and down season for the Dallas Cowboys in 2021.

Prescott played as well as any quarterback in football for the first half of the season. He was firmly in the MVP discussion and was off to the best performance of his career through six weeks.

Then, the end of the New England Patriots game happened.

In the road win over the Patriots in October, Prescott suffered a calf strain injury that changed the trajectory of his 2021 campaign. The injury occurred on the game-winning touchdown pass to CeeDee Lamb, as the quarterback came down on his feet awkwardly.

Prescott went onto miss the next game — a win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football — and he never really looked the same the rest of the way. Whether that is all due to the injury or not is up for debate.

Heading into the season, Dak Prescott was recovering from a gruesome ankle injury and it was well-known that he was pushing through the rehab. Rest was not an option for the quarterback, but that ended up biting him.

Prescott suffered shoulder soreness in camp, likely due to the workload he was putting on his body in preparation for his return to the football field. While it was not a huge setback, it did cost Prescott the preseason.

This week, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy revealed that Dak Prescott underwent offseason shoulder surgery. McCarthy notes it was just a clean up, but it's still noteworthy, nonetheless.

The surgery is not expected to knock Prescott out of any offseason activities. Additionally, it was on his non-throwing shoulder, so the road to recovery is a bit easier with it not being under as much load as the other.

These additional injuries paint a better picture of what may have caused Prescott to struggle down the stretch of the 2021 season.

All of the injuries also reveal that this offseason is crucial for Dak Prescott.

He is a well-known competitor who is hungry to work on his craft. Yet, it will be key for Prescott to rest and trust the medical team over the next few months.

A fully healthy Dak Prescott is extremely important to the success of the Dallas Cowboys. That should be the priority until Week 1.
