Massive contracts are being handed out on the regular across the NFL. It was not too long ago that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott inked the largest contract in league history.
Premium players at premium players are going to get paid. Quarterbacks, offensive tackles, edge rushers, cornerbacks, and wide receivers have seen massive deals. Packers defensive back Jaire Alexander is the latest to cash-in.
Alexander agreed to a four-year, $84 million deal with Green Bay. The contract includes $30 million in signing bonus — the most ever for a corner.
This deal will have an impact on other defensive backs across the league. The market is reset, and agents will use Alexander's rich contract when attempting to get their own clients new deals.
How this impacts Trevon Diggs
That brings us to Trevon Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys. Diggs, a rising player that is set to enter his third season in the league, has blossomed into a star for America's Team.
The former Alabama defender had a solid rookie season in 2020 before emerging as an All-Pro in year-two. Diggs led the league in interceptions, tying the franchise record in takeaways. He established himself as the premier ballhawk in football.
Diggs is entering year-three of his four-year rookie deal. He will be eligible for a contract extension next offseason, which was already going to be a huge negotiation for Dallas.
Now with the market reset at an even higher level, Diggs has a ton of leverage on his side. Furthermore, he is a young, promising defender that figures to be a part of the Cowboys' long-term defensive core next to Micah Parsons.
The Dallas Cowboys have shown to mess around and lose negotiations. Whether it's been waiting too long to pay Dak Prescott, overpaying the running back position, or making a questionable signing with Jaylon Smith, the misses are there.
Trevon Diggs has another season to prove to the Cowboys why he deserves to be the richest cornerback in the NFL. The Cowboys have one year to get everything in line in order to not cause frustration with one of their top talents.
The Jaire Alexander contract will certainly play a role in the discussions.
