The Dallas Cowboys surprised the NFL world when they traded for five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore two weeks ago.
Per Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com, it was announced on Monday that Gilmore will wear No. 21, the same as Hall of Famer Deion Sanders when he played for the team in the 1990s.
It doesn't get any bigger than having to fill the shoes of Sanders at the cornerback position in Dallas.
When Sanders first came to the Cowboys in 1995, they won the Super Bowl. Over his final four seasons in Dallas, Sanders was named a Pro Bowler each year. Also, he was selected as an All-Pro four times, three times as a first-team selection.
Gilmore is still one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. He allowed a completion percentage of only 56.2, 6.5 yards per target, and 11.5 yards per reception in 2022. For context, all three were better than Jalen Ramsey of the Miami Dolphins who is considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
Tag teaming Gilmore with All-Pro Trevon Diggs and rising star DaRon Bland will make the Cowboys' secondary significantly better, and if he can channel just some of the magic Sanders had, it'll be even more effective.
