The Dallas Cowboys decided to move on from wide receiver Amari Cooper and signed Michael Gallup to a five-year deal worth $62.5 million last March, despite him tearing his ACL two months earlier.
Gallup suffered that injury to his left knee. However, on Tuesday, it was reported that Gallup recently had another procedure done to his lower body.
"Gallup had his right knee and right ankle both scoped, two people with knowledge of the session said Tuesday," via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. "Despite the minimally-invasive meniscus repair and ankle clean-up, the plan is for Gallup to be a full participant when the Cowboys formally reconvene in April for the start of their spring workout program."
In 2022, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb took the next step by logging 107 receptions for 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns. That cemented Lamb as a true No. 1 target, which the Cowboys needed, but outside of him, the receiver room didn't do a lot. They combined for 1,161 yards and seven touchdowns, putrid to say the least.
This makes parting ways with Cooper look even worse, especially when his deal could have been reconstructed to keep him. Gallup made a gallant effort to return, but it was clear he wasn't quite right yet.
Dallas did draft Jalen Tolbert in the third round last year, but he only logged 89 offensive snaps and just two receptions for 12 yards during his rookie campaign.
When the NFL draft rolls around in April, wide receiver needs to be a priority for the Cowboys after mishandling things last offseason.
